Motor Trend reports on all "Dad's" cars. After checking out the review, what you buy?

Before I pick a car I would like to point out that they call these aspirational sedans, or old guy cars, so myself and I think most people that will respond to this aren't really their target market. Second I think it's funny that they show a picture from the 70s when the top aspirational sedans were all American, and now they are all foreign.

I would pick the Passat(I know big suprise there). Past experience with "the new better Hundai" has still shown me they do a half-a-s-s job at car building. They may build a car that is better equiped than other cars in their class, but I would rather have a better built car with fewer cup holders. There is nothing wrong with Toyotas, I just think the Avalons are about as exciting as a washing machine. I ahve never been a fan of "good transportation" I want some entertainment and involvment everytime I drive. The Passat handles the best, not just by the numbers, but it has consistency which is what European cars are good at. Japanese cars quite often look better on paper, but once you drive them you find out that sometimes they handle great other times conditions change just a little and all of a sudden they are a handfull.

The Passat probably won't be as reliable as the Toyota, I would be shocked if the Toyota required anythng more than scheduled maintenance in the first five years of ownership. My past experience with Vdubs tells me that the Passat will need to visit the dealer at least once a year for something unscheduled.(Even though my current hasn't). I am willing to deal with a headache for a day or two a year for 363 other days of driving enjoyment. As much as I am disappointed with the looks of the new Passat I still think its the best looking car of the group.

hahahaha......that was actually my first thought, except unfortunately for me it was like "if I was 10 years older"

Eventhough lately I have been considering buying a B5 Passat or B6 A4 Wagon.

You know...when i was a kid..i never thought of buying a wagon ever...like..in my lifetime...haha...but after being in the VW scene for awhile now and seeing all the different things you can do to make a wagon look kool...when the time comes to buy a wagon when children have invaded my life and I still want to try to keep whatever youthfullness i have left in my life...then i'd buy a wagon...hahaha

actually my dad has a 97 avalon and my mom has a 04 passat with the 4motion and while i would probobly take the passat because it is a little funner than the boat they call the avalon, but the avalon in my experience is a little more comfortable than the passat and is a great highway cruiser
