I currently have a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L with an automatic transmission. My wife was currently driving the car when it stopped shifting past 2nd gear. I checked the fluid levels and it was low so I refilled it to the proper levels with no change in the result. I drove the car this morning and I have heard say if the transmission was broke there would be some grinding noise where the gear(s) where breaking, but I hear none of that type noise coming from the transmission. Any alternative solutions other than complete transmission overhaul are welcome. Thanks.

Any check engine lights on? What does the fluid look or smell like? Are you sure it is not going into 3rd but just not going into overdrive. many times a TPS sensor can cause it not to go into overdrive. I would get it scanned to see if you have any codes.

No check engine lights are coming on. The transmission fluid that was in there had a very similar color to the new that I put back into the transmission to get it back to the right level. As far as the shifting I have D1, D2, and D on my column. I can manually shift from D1, D2, but if I go from D2 to D it doesn't go any further. It just goes into high revs which I don't let it get up to high. It is the same if I just put it in D and let it go automatically.
