Dropped a pencil (yes the writing utensil) in a 96' jetta gas tank

Yes, its actually true.... My buddy ran out of gas and found a gas station that didn't sell gas cans. He bought a milk container to fill with gas instead and used a pencil to prod the gas door open (the little one that keeps debris out of a tank when the cap is off. As you can imagine, his hands were covered in gasoline making the pencil quite slippery. He dropped the pencil into the tank and I *** we should attempt to retrieve it. Does anybody know how we might go about this? We are dumb teenagers with no auto repair experience and little money for specialist but we will do what is necessary if given proper directions. Thank you very much.... Alex-

One choice is to just leave it to see if it will cause a problem. It probably will as the wood disolves. But by then you might be older, wiser and richer!

Chances are that it won't be a problem. The wood and the lead should not disolve, you might get the paint on it to disolve but will either get caught in the filter or make it through and burn off in the cylinders with the gas. The paint amount is very minimal. Forget about it.

Yeah, put your mind to rest nothings gonna get past the filter that
could cause harm to the motor.

A pencil is going to have a difficult time traveling through fuel lines. Just leave it in there... when you are really low on gas you will know because the pencil will be banging around in the tank.
